Setting realistic fitness goals for your body
Don’t know where to start with setting goals? Let me help you set a goal that is realistic for YOU.
There are many benefits to setting goals to work towards on your fitness journey. Setting fitness goals allow you to exercise focus, determination, and discipline, all of which can be used in different areas of your life. Exercise isn’t a temporary solution to a problem, it’s a lifestyle, therefore setting goals will help with motivation on days where you don’t feel like working out.
Living a healthy, fit, active and productive lifestyle isn’t about perfectionism and being on point every single day. It’s about being resilient and consistent in building healthy habits. No one is perfect. No ones routine is perfect. It’s completely normal to go through waves. Motivation ebs and flows. Some days you’re a little more slow paced.
Be kind to your body and mind. It’s all about building healthy habits slowly and developing a maintainable routine that makes you the happiest version of YOU.
It’s often misconceived that you have to be extreme in your life changes to reach your goal. Well I for one can tell you that going zero to hero isn’t sustainable nor realistic. The key is all in the consistency of positive choices you make today, tomorrow and every day after that. Exercising for one day won’t make a difference, just like skipping a day of exercise won’t make a difference. Eating healthy for one day won’t make a difference, just like eating unhealthy for one day won’t make a difference. It’s all in the consistency of your lifestyle.
Set goals using the SMART & FITT principles:
S – specific
M – measurable
A – appropriate
R – realistic
T – time specific
F – frequency
I – intensity
T – time
T – type
Accountability: (Someone or something to help hold you accountable)
Let make it practical:
Time to set your goals. Whether it’s an immediate goal, short-term aim, or long-term goal, be sure to set a goal that is true and authentic to you. Grab a pen and paper.
Are your goals SMART? Write them down, stick them on the bathroom mirror, wake up every morning and make a conscious decision to chase your goal. When you find a moment in your day where that vision is slipping away, slow down, take two deep breaths and take yourself back to that moment first thing in the morning looking at your goals in the mirror. Then make the decision that aligns with that goal.
Checking in with your goals
The whole idea behind setting goals is making sure there is something to work towards therefore it is so important to track your progress. This shouldn’t be daunting — it gives you a chance to confirm you’re on your way to achieving your goal, or shows you that you might need to make some changes to get back on track.
One day you’ll look back and realise you reached your goal by following a long path of small, positive decisions you made along the way. Working towards a goal will NEVER be easy, but it WILL BE REWARDING! If you don’t reach the goal you set for yourself in the specific time period, your fitness journey isn’t over! You’re building a lifestyle not a once off tick of the box.
